I think they gave me a white bag to put the green back inside. That has become common practice at a lot of the boutiques. Its scary to think someone might follow you home, and sadly it seems to show we have to now keep an eye out for cars that might be following us home.

Now that I think about it, I think they do put the green rolex bag into a white bag, but it still never occurred to me to be on the lookout. Perhaps naivety on my part but it's Newbury St.

I parked a block away on the street, got into my car and drove home. Going forward I'll be sure to conduct a few Surveillance Detection Routes (SDR's) on my way home. All those years reading spy novels wasn't wasted on me.

It begs the question about insurance on an item just purchased. Does the CC offer some protection? Cartier provided an unlabeled bag when I bought something from their boutique last year as well. No hoodlums that day either, whew!

I have made purchases on Newbury Street over the years and never thought about people watching to see who has exited a store with a bag. I suppose much like you I presumed Newbury Street is relatively safe.

When walking in cities, I am always aware of my surroundings, and the people nearby. However, and incident like that makes one say, we have to be even more cautious and observant the we were before.

I doubt a credit card provides any protection from being robbed. If it does it's probably to a very limited degree...not $40K (the alleged value of the watch the person purchased). Homeowners generally only provides say $1-2K in coverage for general items that are not specifically itemized on your policy. I know when I call and get voice mail, or I email my insurance agent to add watches, there is a message that says, "Insurance Coverage requested via voicemail or electronic Email is NOT legally binding until you have received direct confirmation from one of our agents." Therefore, I always insist on an email confirming an item has been added to my policy.

Unless he's implying that the security guards are tipping off the robbers about potential victims, (that's why they're on the phone?) then I think the only other conclusion is that he thinks store security should drive off anyone in the area. Or maybe just the "obvious" bad guys. You know who I mean...

I think that's what he's implying.

There's a lot of advantages to a tip-off. You lower the risk by only going for customers with what you know you can fence, rather than target any bag (could be one of you lot on your AD-bribing expeditions). If you already have a buyer, you don't need to hold the stolen goods in inventory long, and know the ROI in advance. The guard can also make a "customer assessment" to minimise likely physical risk during the operation (to further lower police interest). All this for a few hundred bucks to some guy on minimum wage. There'll be demand as this is almost more reliable than the legit way to buy a new model, a means of skipping the waitlist if you will.

Donnie Brasco mentioned in his book that he picked jewelry theft as an undercover "career" because it was both nonviolent (giving him an out of the bad stuff he couldn't do anyway as a cop) and difficult to trace.
