I'm looking to spruce up the wardrobe with a few new suits and sport coats. I don't have the time (or money) to go bespoke or MTM so I guess that means I'll need to buy off the rack and to find a good local tailor to do alterations. Does anybody have any recommendations for tailors in the east end? I live in Whitby.

Did you look at Suitsupply? Location in Yorkville. You can check the offerings on their website. They offer fair prices on alterations.

I would go get fitted at Spier & Mackay in Toronto. Use their in-house tailor. Yeah it’s a drive to the city, but if you’re going for a few items it’s worth your while to just buy and tailor at one spot.

If you like the products you can shop online in he future, call the Toronto store, purchase, and show up for a few alterations at once again.

Goods move fast though, without huge inventory levels so be mindful of that. It’s not a suitsupply who pulls from the USA and has huge global volumes.

What size are you? Off the rack is not too bad of an option if you’re a 38R, 40R or 42R. There’s a lot offered in those sizes. Personally I use Xavier near Yonge and Bloor for slight tweaks.

Thanks for the input guys. I am 38R with fairly typical proportions so my plan is to buy OTR and then get some minor alterations (ie. shorten the sleeves, maybe smooth out the roll between the shoulder blades). I don't think I would look significantly different in a MTM jacket so the extra expense is likely not worth it for me. It's too bad I no longer live downtown (used to be quite close to Yonge and Bloor) or I'd certainly check out Xavier.

I have one suit from SuSu from a few years ago, and I just received a sport coat from SM that I ordered online. They look to be about the same in quality to my admittedly untrained eye and I would be happy to purchase from either again. There does not seem to be any clear consensus on this forum as to which is better so if there is a difference in quality, it's likely minor. That being said, I would prefer to support a local business all other things being equal. The issue I have is that both stores are downtown and it's difficult for me to travel there from Whitby. Ya, I know that many people who live in Whitby travel downtown for work every day, but I would have to go in on the weekends and there are just too many preschooler/baby things to do then. Although, I agree with CanadaCal that one trip to SM at the beginning just to sort out slim vs contemporary for future purchases of jackets/shirts/pants and to figure out whether I should upsize or stay with 38R in outerwear when the time comes might be a worthwhile investment.

But until then, does anybody have any experience with alterations tailors in the Durham region?

Both S&M and Suitsupply have great trailors in-house that can handle most alterations.

Anyone know a high quality reliable cleaner? Is Dove in Yorkville any good - which location?

Long story short, the suit I wore to my work Christmas party in early December has a stain (wine?) on it. And I just noticed it today.
