Before I had a two piece “dinner suit” I did the faux thing a couple times. Before and after below, Navy suit, with shirt, black bow tie vs midnight shawl DB dinner suit below:

Headgear aside, the cut of the suit is very unusual with the blunt crop and disproportionate arm width, not to mention the flap pockets. I wonder if it was made for him and which tailor was thinking, “YES… THIS.”

I get it though—it’s the Grammys. Entertainers typically don‘t go for the most classic and traditional styles.

Today's posting is a "proof of concept" posting, due to the unexpected acquisitions made on my recent vacation. The shoes are Magnanni, and are from El Corte Ingles in Madrid, where they were a couple of hundred dollars cheaper than at Bergdorf Goodman in NYC, when sales tax is included. The bottle green dinner jacket is from Favourbrook in London, and was heavily marked down, as there is a subtle issue with the "grain" of the velvet on one of the back panels.

The jacket needs an adjustment to the sleeves, but I wanted to see what it could look like, especially with the latest silk waistcoat, from my last foray to Favourbrook last October, hence this assemblage. Note that the shirt and socks are not formal - used only for demonstration purposes.

For those of you that wear midnight jackets - do you also wear a midnight bow tie or a traditional black tie? Wedding expenses are adding up so unless it's going to throw off my look I may just utilize the black tie I already have rather than buying a midnight tie. Thoughts?

I would use a black one, just as with other differently coloured jackets.

I wear black. I know some recommend having jacket facings in midnight. I had mine made in black. 🤷‍♂️ With this my facings match with black ties.

What are people’s ideal black tie wardrobe?

For example, perhaps everyone should have a tuxedo peak lapel 3 piece, one button.

Then, a sb shawl?

Or a white silk dinner jacket? Or a cream db shawl lapel? (Ala Casablanca?)

With all respect, I don't see why you shouldn't use a black tie. You don't match the tie with the colour of the jacket, do you? Not without a reason it's called Black Tie.

Or would you use an orange tie here?
