Going to see my tailor next week to plan a dark blue/midnight tux for my wedding. I want something that will look snazzy on the big day but also versatile enough that I can hopefully use it for black tie events for many years to come. I’m really inspired by this post this Steven Hitchcock post. I love the turn up cuffs - what do you think? I’m thinking about adding a little waistcoat as well. Also, any recommendations for fabrics?

Thank you all for the helpful advice. I ended up going with a Drapers wool and mohair blend 290gr. Also opted for midnight blue facings thank you @Andy57 ! Will post some pictures of the final product when it arrives.

As I understand it, 100 years ago the dude's who wore black tie basically wore some version of it every night. Go to Delmonico's for dinner and literally everyone was in black tie.

Not suggesting we return to this, but wouldn't it be great if we could all just decide on one 'outfit' that we all change into every day at 6pm?

Are there any black tie events acutally?

I get seldom invited to weddings, where the brom and me often the only ones in suits.

I do not play in casinos.

I am not a movie actor for public servants in the intelligence services with problems concerning alcohol and toxic masculinity.

I seldom go to the opera or theater where I am wearing a suit are one of the few, unfortunately.

I wear suits in office, not always and for client meetings, and then I am often the only one with a tie and pocket square.

So am I a social outcast or are the actual black tie events so few that one has to purposefully look for them?

Best regards

Pascal

I doubt this to be true. From my understanding, Black tie was primarily reserved for a dinner party with guests and evening social gatherings (such as fine dining in the evening or an ocean liner dinner). Also, 100 years ago fine dining restaurants were not commonplace. The patron demographic was also primarily the upper/upper middle class.

I strongly doubt that the upper class wore black tie every evening for dinner.

For the past six years, I've been playing in an orchesta, where Black Tie was standard. But last summer, there was an arbitrary switch to Concert Black, and last month, I left the orchestra. So my tux will be on hiatus.

Orchestras have been irreparably damaged in many ways; lack of regional style, no oversight or standards for conductors, concert programmers shoving insufferable new music down the concertgoing public’s throats, etc. But none of these have done as much damage to the orchestra’s morale and spirit as the switch from white/black tie to the Applebees waiter abomination known as concert black.

So my family is from New Orleans. Growing up I remember my parents(not very social) attend or have the opportunity to attend at a minimum two black tie events per year held during Carnival season (Zulu and Nomtoc).

My older cousin, who is very social and is high up in his Social club (former 2019 Nomtoc King) attends at a minimum 10-16 per year. One of which (Nomtoc Ball) requires him to wear white tie (yes he own's a tailcoat).

But if you are social and active in the city social clubs, you can attend at least 5 or more per year from December to March. That's easy.

Definitely a class thing, for those with servants- Agree it's hard to believe, but every history I've read seems to confirm this. Emily Post's description of evening clothes is probably the most detailed that I know of, "To a man who can not afford to get two suits of evening clothes, the Tuxedo is of greater importance. It is worn every evening and nearly everywhere, whereas the tail coat is necessary only at balls, formal dinners, and in a box at the opera."

So if black tie has taken the place of the old white tie and tails, do we need a new 'every evening nearly everywhere' standard?

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
