J&M shoes were really quite good when they were made in the USA and it is almost a certainty that they used Horween shell at the time. Clean them up and post some pictures on the Vintage thread too.

Horween is a little more lustrous but they are both equal in terms of wearing and comfort. Need to wear both some more to provide more perspective though.

I saw I posted some Florsheims several months back, which reminded me it was time to get out its sister pair. I found this second pair at a great deal in a slightly different size, which comes in handy to accommodate weight and/or swelling changes as they occur.
