After all the umming and ahhing, plenty of time spent on the Cordings website, I went with the S&M Liberty Coat in the end. Very happy with it. Yes, it could be a bit longer, and the sleeves could be another inch longer, but overall I can't imagine a better option for $600.

I almost went with the Ulster, until on a whim I checked with S&M CS and they let me know that their Ulster doesn't button up all the way (as in, fold the lapels straight and treat it like a 19th century coat).

Did you order this coat in the same size as you'd order for an S&M suit jacket or one size larger? And does it have enough room to layer over tailoring?

I picked this up from the tailor earlier today. He brought the sleeves up about an inch, and moved the buttons on the Martingale to essentially cinch in the sides two inches in total.

I like the overall look much better, and it still slips over tailored clothing just fine. Comparison before-and-after images.

Thanks for sharing this. I have a polo coat that I love but just felt a bit too boxy so I don't wear it as much. Moving the buttons on the martingale seems like an easy way to add a bit of shape.

I just realized I forgot to post pictures of that polo coat I found the other week. I snapped one pic before I went sent it out to its new owner. This one is Mongolian cashmere in a double breasted, notch lapel configuration with a martingale back, pretty unique and just the right amount of slouchy in my opinion.

That is one sharp-looking coat! You can immediately see the quality of the fabric. How many overcoats do you possess? Quite a bunch it seems, at least compared to my three, my latest acquisition being this one:

Harris Tweed.

As I do in several threads, I post here garments I like or find interesting for the discussion, they are not (unfortunately) mine.

By the way, I have six overcoats.

The coat has a nice cut and good proportions, but the collar is not my taste.

Fair enough. Anyway, I like it, and it’s somehow a crossover between a sports jacket and an overcoat, for mild winter days only.

A notch lapel is not the usual option for a double breasted overcoat and that looks even more odd to me due to the collar being wider than the lapel. Just my opinion, as always.

What? I do not quite understand what you mean, I’m afraid. That Harris tweed coat of mine is not double-breasted in the first place?

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
