I also live in Toronto. We just had a extreme cold alert that is thankfully over. Wore my Eddie Bauer superior parka and was warm. Although I'll be looking to replace it with something more modern fitting as it fits like a tent. But with extreme cold function over form.

-20C feeling like -28C is stupid cold but hey Im originally from a country that is 28C all year round.

What do you wear on your head with wool/shearling overcoats? Usually I only have knit wool caps but those won't suffice for -20F I imagine. Not that I've ever experienced -20F, -20C is probably the coldest I've been to.
Knit wool tuques were fine for me in my two trips that far down the thermometer.

Standing around at midnight waiting for a bus at -25 °F (1980), in thick wool socks and Sorel pac boots, my feet began to feel the chill, but my head was fine. 75.5% ABV rum from Bermuda acted as an antifreeze, but it probably would have led to frostbite if that bus hadn't finally arrived!

Ice skating in similar wool socks and X-C ski boots at -20 °F (2016), my head was toasty warm in a tuque, and my feet stayed warm as long as I continued skating. Without the mask, my face definitely would have frozen solid when skating into a headwind.

Wool does a great job when properly applied.

Screengrab from Ralph Fitzgerald's Instagram: Made of Cashmere and Angora. What a beautiful overcoat! I love the longer length on this one.

I really like the lightness of down. Very beneficial especially when travelling. And it doesn't have to be an outdoorsy look. Herno makes down coats that work well with CM. Mostly in synthetics of course, but also in wool flannel. One benefit of a synthetic shell is that when it is snowing, the snow doesn't stick the same way as it would on wool, so you don't look like a snowman when you arrive. Sometimes focusing on practicality ends up being more stylish than focusing on style I guess.

Another maker is Moorer, but significantly more expensive. Moncler also has some wool down coats.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
