One of my favorites is the Invertere Alpaca " Bear" Great Coat.
I have something similar in Melton which is over 40 years old

Does anyone know if there is a well composed treatise on optimal overcoat design ratios (in relation to the wearer's dimensions)?

I ask as I generally find that in an aesthetic sense, most overcoats are too short in design with poor button placement and balance.

Attached photos comments:

Burberrys - Great length.
Black - Wonderful proportions.
Permanentstyle greatcoat (Edward Sexton) - Not my style of coat but it is wonderfully balanced with the perfect length. The lapels are a little big in my opinion although I understand it is part of the function of the coat and thus, naturally result in having such size in that kind of button arrangement.

My latest overcoat, the (in)famous Polo Ralph Lauren camel hair polo coat. Bloomingdale's had a large-enough discount for me to go for it. This is a size 42, it's quite a full cut, but kinda classical too. Not sure about the arms, I may wear it for a few weeks before deciding if I want to have them shortened.

The arms on mine fit the same as yours, it seems like a deliberate aesthetic decision.

The sleeves are too long for me and the cut too full/boxy. Did you try the 40 size?

Military-style greatcoat?

I think it's actually similar to this one (outside that camel coat there were 3 similar ones RL had this season but I guess once it's sold out you can't search)

except
1. metal button
2. instead patch with flap (is that called postal pocket?) it's slanted welt (so easier for hands to going in)

edit: found it, think it's this one (and actually looks like it's longer too)

And finally found the 3rd one

And the original camel

Cheaper ish stuff, think I intend to casual them, leaning towards olderbest but M (I’m US36) looks on the short side, S&M is getting a bit pricy for just random play around purposes

What’s with Edward Sexton

Old version nothing my size

New version, can probably take 40 and chop sleeve a bit, a lot poly blend though

Have you bought from them? The sleeves sizing seems really short..

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
