Aside from the shortening the sleeves, is there anything else that looks like it should be altered? Curious if the coat looks too long?

Also, how difficult would it be to shorten the sleeves given the buttons and strap? Found a great deal for it on ebay and wondering if I should pull the trigger.

In my eyes it's one size too large, but, if you like the look, still wearable, with the due alterations.

The length doesn't look bad, but you may consider to reduce it a bit as well.

What temperatures can a 680g Donegal coat handle? Is there a significant difference in warmth and performance between a 680g and a 720g coat?

It's a philosophical question: synthetic fibres don't belong in worthy clothing (I would make an exception for socks, where some nylon could be acceptable).
Agreed. I personally don't have any issues with synthetic fibers as long as it is a low percentage. They can add durability and flexibility. What's a low percentage? It just depends.

No doubt inspired by the classic Arny's Forestiere Jacket:

I doubt 40g matters much at those weights. Diminishing returns and all.
It depends on the overall construction of the coat but I'd wager that'll cover you to freezing, maybe a little below.

It all depends on a type of Fibre and how it's woven. 600g tweed would be much warmer than a 720g cashmere. Simply because it will trap more air and will provide a better wind resistance than a delicate cashmere.

I got it, wanted to love it, but in the end sent it back (and had to eat a couple hundred in import tax). The herringbone tweed is absolutely fantastic. It’s a little bit lighter so good for 30-50 degree weather.

But it did NOT look good on me at all. It’s really soft and unstructured. Too much so. Looks, for lack of a better word, floppy and wrinkly. Might look better on guys with bigger chests and shoulders but on my slim frame it wasn’t great.

I also didn’t care for how the collar sat when folded down. Just limply sits there.

Interesting! How did you size it? I wear a 38 and I'm considering a size 3.

I sized down. So I’m a 38-ish chest depending on the day and got a 2. The length and arms were spot on, but the whole coat was maybe too slim? Probably a 3 with some tailoring would have fit better.

Attached a pic for reference (37-38 inch chest, 5’9”) showing the “limp” collar I didn’t like.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
