Hey all! Looking for some guidance in choosing a nice warm tweed balmacaan coat. I really love the Corb II from Coherence and have been lucky enough to try it out here in person, but I'm not super keen on their current tweed fabric offerings. The fabric of theirs I love the most was only offered as a limited option for their 5th anniversary back in 2019, so that's not really feasible as an option anymore.

I really love the look of a neppy Donegal tweed, but even some flecks in another tweed pattern are good enough for me! I've been deciding between the Wythe Raglan Wool Overcoat and Drake's Wool Raglan Coat, as I appreciate the slouchy and casual cut of these coat, as well as their subtle details. Their textural fabric offerings are definitely more up my alley as well! Are there any other coats out there that fit this bill? Trying to weigh my options before making an investment.

Depends on what kind of stylization you prefer. Wythe is roomier and more workwear/westernwear inspired while the Drakes is slimmer, shorter, and more 2010s #menswear. Which one complements your closet better is something only you can answer.

Not exactly your specs but an option in Japan at a fraction of the price of the ones you listed. I have the brown herringbone and it is warm enough for Tokyo, layered of course. Harris tweed, made in Japan, raglan balmacaan. No patch pockets and fabric is not coat-specific. I've had mine for 3 seasons and am quite satisfied.

That looks like the quintessential Balmacaan coat.

I cleaned out my coat collection, leaving me with a lacuna to fill. So I panic-bought a very old Coherence Corb from Drop93, which is incoming. Looking forward to adding the Mawata liner.

What is it about Coherence's present tweed offering you don't like?

For me, tweed is too smooth/uniform and the colors are a little too dark for my wardrobe! Objectively, their tweed is extremely soft and high quality, but I'm personally looking for something with a little more texture and unevenness. I usually gravitate more towards fabrics that have a little more contrast to them, such as Donegal and barleycorn tweeds.

Coat guy buys another coat. Just got this coat a couple weeks ago.

Really enjoying wearing it. Sturdy, windproof, articulated elbows, half-raglan sleeves. I like the flappy chest pocket too, it fits in terms of overall aesthetic.

Collar and lapels almost want to stay flipped up rather than stay flat.

Great coat design.

Not my taste and style, but I can see how this appeals to those who like it loose and slouchy.

The 18east overcoats are simply the best value, period.

Hi guys! Need advice/info. After hunting for Kaptain Sunshine Traveller's Coat (KS TC) in my size and a desirable color I started debating if I should just cut loose and buy one of the Drake's balmacaans. I'm trying to do the responsible thing and talk myself out of it. Would love your input. Here are the considerations that I've come up with:

1. Is wool quality proportional to the cost, i.e. is it noticeably better than KS TC or 18 East Lamar mentioned above? Is it itchy? Is it sturdy?
2. What would be the highest temp when it's still wearable?
3. Would it be easy to resell if the condition is still good?

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
