reminds me of one of my past bad decisions. over a 12 years ago, i found a Nakamichi ZX-7 for $20 at an electronics meet. guy said he didn't know if it worked. got it home. it would FF and RW, but not play. my friend knows Nak decks reasonably well. he couldn't get it going. there's a local SF bay area "tape head" that knows how to fix them. the quote was $500 for going through the unit.Yammy tape deck update: Welp, found a tape. FFWD and Reverse are working, Play will not, can't seem to spin with a tape at low speed. Gunna need to update those belts after all. Hopefully that's all it needs.
In other news I tried the tape in a thrifted 90's Denon mini system ($15, sans remote) , worked great and sounds better than I expected. Those little Denon's sound great overall, even more so if you upgrade the speakers.
Yeah, that's wild!! I thought tape decks were dead ducks for ages because, well they were unless something special or top of the line, like yours. Always ignored them then last year I found a good one, some guy followed me in the thrift. He really wanted it so I let him have it. Since then I wanted to try one out, haven't seen a good one since.reminds me of one of my past bad decisions. over a 12 years ago, i found a Nakamichi ZX-7 for $20 at an electronics meet. guy said he didn't know if it worked. got it home. it would FF and RW, but not play. my friend knows Nak decks reasonably well. he couldn't get it going. there's a local SF bay area "tape head" that knows how to fix them. the quote was $500 for going through the unit.
i was too cheap... but what i should have done was just put it on a shelf. i got into "marie kondo mode" a few years later and impulsively sold it broken for $225 on craigslist. took a while to get that much too. the guy who bought it said it's a ***** of a job to do.
working, it's now worth over $2k. i still regret letting it go. but to be honest, though i love dead technology, i have CD, vinyl, VHS... even LASERDISC! cassette tapes are just fvcking ANNOYING!
