For Ralph Lauren, the RRL (Double RL) label, launched in 1993, does not directly tie to the year 1903. However, the RRL brand draws heavily from themes of early 20th-century Americana, particularly the rugged lifestyle of the American West and workwear traditions.

Potential Connection to 1903:

  • RRL Inspiration: The RRL label takes its name from Ralph Lauren's Colorado ranch, Double RL, and its designs evoke vintage Americana styles from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. While not explicitly tied to 1903, the era serves as a thematic backdrop for the brand's aesthetic, celebrating durable workwear, denim, and military-inspired apparel.
  • Historical Context:
    • The year 1903 aligns with the rise of denim as a staple for American laborers and the burgeoning popularity of rugged, functional clothing—key influences on the RRL brand.
    • This period also saw the early development of iconic American clothing companies like Levi’s and Carhartt, whose heritage directly inspires RRL’s designs.

In Summary:

While 1903 is not specifically referenced by Ralph Lauren's RRL label, the era's aesthetic and cultural significance align closely with the brand's dedication to vintage, rugged Americana style. The label’s ethos pays homage to this pivotal time in American history.
Actually, I think the writeup does a good job of explaining the sweater. I don't see this writeup on the RRL site; where is it from?

George Adams Wyman (July 3, 1877 – November 15, 1959) was the first person to make a transcontinental crossing of the United States by motor vehicle.[1] In 1903, Wyman rode his 1902 California Motor Company motor bicycle from San Francisco to New York City in 51 days, finishing 20 days before Dr. Horatio Nelson Jackson, the first person to cross the continent by automobile.[2]

In May 1903 George Wyman left San Francisco on a California Moto Bicycle bound for New York City. After 50 days, hands in bandages after having pedaled the last 150 miles Wyman arrived in New York City.

--> Left San Francisco, the West
--> Arrived in New York City, birth place of Ralph Lauren

"connecting Western Heritage with the East" ?

" The Yale motorcycle was built by the Consolidated Manufacturing Company based in Toledo, Ohio, after they had acquired the rights to the California motorcycle. The California is famous as the first internal combustion vehicle to cross the American continent in 1903."

The motorcycle is on display in RRL stores.

^ not ChatGPT by the way.

Edit: additionally, this season is clearly motorcycle themed/inspired, so I am sure that's the "1903" reference.

Were there even gas stations from San Francisco to New York back then? Nothing about that guy or company in the history of the motorcycle wiki. 1903 is widely accepted as the starting point of Harley Davidson.

Would any of the RRL denim fits qualify as athletic slim straight? Long back rise, decently wide hips and thighs, slight taper.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
