I bought a peacoat from J. Crew back in 2009 or 2010 and it was by far the nicest peacoat I had ever owned. I bought it to replace a Sterlingwear milspec one that I had bought at the Naval Exchange on Norfolk back in '99 or '00. I thought the Sterlingwear one was pretty nice and that it was cool that it was the real deal but the J. Crew one was so much warmer (IIRC, it had a quilted "Primaloft" liner) and the wool was noticeably nicer in just about every regard.
I wore the jacket all winter for 5 or 6 years but sadly my midsection expanded too much and I had to send it to Goodwill. I went back to J. Crew for a replacement but by then, the ones they were offering were trash - no quilted lining, paper thin scratchy wool, too short in the length, etc. I sent that back and "upgraded" to a Schott. The Schott is pretty nice but I still miss the one I bought from J. Crew years ago.
FWIW, J. Crew has a pretty nice looking peacoat again this season and they now have a quilted lining again. The last thing I need is more outerwear but I am curious to see if it is anywhere near as nice as their old ones.
As for the rest of J. Crew... I used to love them and then they took a big downturn in terms of quality about a dozen years ago. Over the past couple years though they seem to have made an effort to turn things around and each season there is usually an item or two that really calls to me.
Same. I had one of the navy, probably c. 2009 or 2010 also surprisingly. Also have one in moss green (I will try to find a photo, almost amazed it was J Crew, but for that period, quality stuff was the norm) that I still wear, it was that good. Since then, I've replaced with RRL (have a wool, and also the moleskin from this past drop) as well as a Schott (I love the Schott actually, since it still has that unfussy utilitarian vibe that is lacking in most "designer" coats), but no classic navy J Crew I'm afraid. That said, I was living in Tennessee at the time, so having a cool weather coat was important! When I moved back to Texas, most of my cold weather coats went into storage or kept out at my cabin, where they get a day or two of wear per year
