I agree with many if not most of his takes when he goes on about tailoring. (Although it is weird that what was already SF consensus when I was posting here in high school many many years ago is received by Twitter as some brand new insight from "the menswear guy.")

In other areas though he just kind of echoes influencers and that's odd to me, like plugging Standard & Strange, perpetually posting Crompton pics, etc. Or those Japanese chinos he recommends, which cost 3x their Japan price if you're ordering from the US lol.

I mean...it helps that Standard & Strange IS awesome.

They are both pretty great.
Fwiw, I asked my wife to get me a piece from Standard and Strange as my main Christmas present, and got my oldest daughter some Good Art Jewelry from Self Edge as her Christmas present.

I buy from both, too, since the brands they carry don't overlap completely. Both great places, even if I don't buy or like everything each carries. S&S house brand loop wheel tees are seriously slept on compared to other brands. Plus they are the only place locally who carries Wonder Looper products.

Do you know how they compare to the RMC athletic tees? I see the price is @ the same. I've been wanting to try them but they're always out of stock

I cant compare to RMC athletic tees since I haven't had one before. Are you wondering about the RMC tees or the S&S tees? Unclear from the way it's phrased. I am happy to offer my thoughts on the S&S tees and can compare them to Wonder Looper and Warehouse 4601 tees, if youre interested.

I've been wearing the RMC athletic tees for a few years so I'm due for some new ones. Just wondering if you knew how the S&S compared. I'll give em' a shot when they restock if I can find an excuse to go up to Berserkeley.

Appears to be the softest guy on X, and by a large, large margin. Don't think he can afford to allow any dissenting views.

He's created his own little echo chamber by insta banning any dissenters.
Leaving Styleforum because it was too argumentative and ending up on Twitter is admittedly amusing, but I guess I don't get these critiques? He regularly engages with people insulting him. Why not block a few folks who just call you gay over and over again?

I think he left Styleforum because HE was too argumentative. He likes to respond to disagreements with him, or criticisms of his posts, with personal insults, which tended to escalate things into extended arguments. I don't know whether it works on Xitter, but a gigabyte-gish-galop of photos of a disgraced duke douche named Edward Windsor never seemed to be an effective debating technique here. Some people just aren't interested in dressing like some Nazi from almost a hundred years ago.

Yes, that was my relationship with Derek in a nutshell. Lots of decent interactions over the years but any disagreement resulted in personal insults and overall mockery. Mostly amusing but tiresome overall.

Initially - snarky reasons why you’re wrong and clearly stupid.

Developing - endless pics of random dudes dressed the way he said was great (and lots of the former English King, traitor to his country).

Finally - tailor-made memes and final disparagement then unilaterally declaring the matter closed.

Anyway, it was all about clothes so who really cares I guess? I scratch my head sometimes wondering why I even bothered with it.

I will say reading those reactions in his twitter feed posted above: damn what a bunch of sexually insecure sad men…

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
