after this convo I pulled down a painting from my hallway , honestly it doesn't really get seen .

art + lighting seems less expensive and could make good sense given the bedroom across the hallway , the doorway at the end is even set simpatico . and you could do smaller stuff ...

still i prefer OPs plan and if that happens I would definitely enroll all 4 windows into whatever move gets made . and I would definitely consider landscape lighting to illuminate the interior , perhaps create movement with plantings outside , etc .

This is the hallway. Window wall is on the left. Door on the left is a half bathroom, and door on the right is a bedroom. The hallway is about 5.5 ft wide.

I had the same question about the art being viewable in the hallway, but I thought a few smaller pieces would work.

And yeah, part of the long term plans is to do leaded glass windows, which would mean adding two and changing out the glass or entire window of the other two.

You need a light fixture on the end of that hall. Honestly, it looks like opening is lower than the ceiling, so I would also at least have a recessed light directly behind that too.

Seriously, my homeowner's in Houston has increased over 50% in 3 years. Tennessee, doubled in 5 years.

My P&I is fixed for 30 years. Insurance goes up because the cost of building is going up. Likewise property taxes keep going up. Just glad my P&I is near zero.

I went the Bill Gates route and just had all of my walls replaced with HD panels and licensed all of the great art collections. I adjust the display in seconds to suit my mood. No impediments to egress.

I'm more concerned about ingress, so I put my old masters over all of my windows. Shutters and other barriers are too utilitarian and tough on the eyes.

Yes! Do a triptych of small, inexpensive pieces to add some interest. Doesn't have to be anything expensive or fancy.

The opening is lower. The ceiling goes up in the hallway to meet the vaulted ceiling of the adjoining family room. The lower opening might be a support beam.

What purpose would the recessed light serve that the art light wouldn't? I'm thinking of doing a wall light on the 3 ft side of the wall on the right and smaller art lights on the longer side of it.

An art light is essentially a task light. It is a targeted light source for the task of viewing art.

You need ambient light to provide uniform illumination down the hallway. I find it visually pleasant when there is a light source at the ends of the hall, so you're always walking toward a light.

I've posted about this before - my building was fired by our carrier a couple of years ago and our rates skyrocketed. We've also had to complete upgrading the electrical to remove the last traces of knob and tube.

Are you going to have a lot of guests over, and want to make a more interesting experience for them? Or are you just decorating for your own appreciation? If it's an open area you might want to go with neutral art, and put personal choices in the private rooms.

I like art like this, but understand people (my parents) might be really creeped out by it. I look for totally different themes, so the walls have different moods.

I see what you mean. I don't think anything I'd put up would creep out guests. I do have guests occasionally, but I'm decorating for myself. In fact, I'm not a fan of bright rooms, and if it were up to me, I'd keep the house without any recessed lights like the previous owner and just use lamps everywhere. But I have a boss.

I could also do a wall light on the left of the facing door, a recessed light on the highest part of the ceiling, and art lights on the right. It would require more switches, of course.
