Anyone have strong opinions on dishwasher brands?

My sister in law isn’t an option, as she lives in Alberta.

I've got a Bosh and it's been going strong for 8 years. You can't even hear it when it runs. Works great, but a couple of the plastic clips on the racks have broken off so some can collapse easily when loading.

Bosch vs. Miele, I went Miele but I think it more comes down to making sure you load the dishwasher correctly and use the full cycle vs. the quick cycle and you'll be happy.

It is worth taking a plate when you go to a store to look at them to ensure you are ok with how the plate sits on the bottom rack. We had these octagonal plates we finally replaced after how annoyingly they say in the bottom rack.

The big difference is price. The Bosch 500 and 800 can be had on sale for <$900 regularly. Miele starts at like $1200 on sale (less frequently) and aren't sold by nearly as many places.

Bosch gets the best reliability from Yale Appliance typically. Miele is mixed.

That's a good pro tip. Never thought about that.

I'd even say bowls are more important as they can be very different shapes. Our bowls have fairly tall straight sides and fit terribly in our current Bosch 100 pleb series. One bowl fits OK, but it is impossible to fit a second one anywhere near it...so I guess bring two bowls.

Our previous dishwasher did OK. The one before it did great as it had a set of tines that could slide out of the way to make wider slots which gave a perfect spot for the bowls. Looks like some of the Bosch 500/800 racks have similar features.

Is that pre-pandemic pricing or something? A bunch of places were running Black Friday/Cyber Monday sales and the 800 was going for $1100-1200 everywhere I checked.

We probably use bowls as frequently as plates and have the same issue. My only complaint about Fiestaware, really.

And of course I had to miss the Black Friday/Cyber Monday sales because we were traveling. Costco has the 800 at $1349, and all the places that are cheaper have delivery, disposal and installation fees that basically make the price the same or just a little less.

I've installed a dishwasher before, but I really don't want to deal with removing the old one and throwing it out.

it might be a *good pro tip* but this to me is a great illustration of a major shortcoming of dishwashers . you shouldn't be obliged to ask your appliance what wares you should eat off of for the sake of it's job . who's working for who here ?

OJFC. It is a one time choice you make when buying the thing. And it is purely a quality of life choice at that...my dishwasher works fine as it is, it would just have MORE capacity if my bowls fit better (and thus be even more efficient than it already is).

Do you not make similar decisions when buying any other appliance? Choosing a cooktop layout/burner size that works well with the pots and pans you most frequently like to use? Choosing a fridge design that fits with the way you like to store things?

You could make the same decision by looking at pictures/videos/manuals online, but @jbarwick's suggestion is incredibly simple...it is trivial to bring a dish to the store and try it first hand.

But sure. Keep being a slave to your sink and pretending you're making the superior choice.

One time thing of bringing a dish to see if they fit in the dishwasher vs hand washing dishes for the rest of my life. I think I know which one I'm choosing.

Ugh don't get me started on PG&E
I may have accidentally told a PG&E executive that their company should be dissolved and the c suite executives prosecuted for murder.

It just sort of slipped out.

That’s an easy fix, and I’m both lazy and uncoordinated. The part costs like 10 bucks and it’s not hard to replace.

Stuff that has to be hand washed gets washed as often as things that need to be dry cleaned around here.

CORELLE4LYFE. Fiestaware seems like something Juggalos would use. Did I get that right? I'm still trying to figure out the ICP Juggalo thing.

Seriously though, Corelle may be a cheap pleb option, but for me they're 10/10 no notes. Perhaps it's their ubiquity, but they seem to be the protean design used by dishwasher designers because our experience has been a perfect match across multiple dishwashers. On top of that, the finish seems to repel food so quick wash is all we ever need for things to come out spotless.

Lots of people don't like Corelle for a variety of reasons - they're not exactly a premium brand and not everyone prefers an industrialized product that is thin, light, durable, etc. Ours are frost white so devoid of cheesy designs that people typically identify with the brand and I haven't had a single complaint in around a decade of use. The only "problem" we've ever had is dishes getting chipped in transit. In actual use, even with my kids occasionally knocking them off the counter, we haven't had a single chip, stain or crack.

We have different dishes for when we have "guests" but those dishes are way less efficient to load in the machine and don't clean up as easily so I avoid them as much as possible.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
