I am looking for a dark brown, grained (hatch grained, pebble grained, etc.) chukka boot. I am avoiding Alden because they have steel shanks and I'll have to take them off for airport security. The only other ones that I can find are the Brecons from Crockett & Jones. However, I'm not a fan of Dainite soles. Any alternatives to consider that don't have steel shanks or Dainite soles?

I might have to end up going for MTO via BlkBrd.

This pair of Brownflex chukkas from Astorflex is a dark brown, pebbled grain leather on a crepe sole. These are sold by Huckberry.

What are some good entry level brands in the UK I should look at if I want a pair of chukkas with non-suede, non-brogue calfskin and dainite sole that won't fall apart too quickly especially under rain? Is it worth getting something below Loake 1880 level? I want a really versatile pair of boots that I can look smart in apart from wearing them casually.

I've seen options from Jones Bootmaker and Oliver Sweeney, which I have heard very mixed reviews for. Loake doesn't seem to have any such options below the 1880 line anymore. Checked Herring and they have a pair in a G fitting that I feel won't work for me. I did find some discontinued models online but they are all half a size too big. Thanks!

Lake offer cheaper lines than the 1880. Other lower priced makers I can think of are NPS and Sanders. A quick search will take you to their websites.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
