What are they going to do with thank you notes? For the most part they will just read it once, and end up throwing it away. Unless you knock it out of the park, they will keep it to show it to people. Probably would mean more if you gave them a gift involving some goofball hobby they have. At least that will show you were paying attention to a genuine interest of theirs that doesn't involve work.

I like handwritten mail - not just thank you notes. My friend sends me just updates and it's cool to see after throwing 20 Pizza Hut junk mail coupons in the trash.

We talk on the phone often and e-mail. However, it's kind of a pleasant surprise that makes your day better. It's also likely not slower than typing it up and printing it out. Unless it's 2000 words and you type 150 wpm.

I send thank you notes regularly and I too have **** handwriting. When I slow down and try to write nicer, it ends up looking like a little kid writing to Santa. I've learned to just to not think about it too much and go for it writing at normal speed.

I usually type the note up in a blank email then copy that down on the card, helps me with phrasing, keeps my head clear, lessens mistakes and stupid spelling errors.

One thing that I've been thinking about it getting a vintage typewriter and typing them that way, on the smaller note paper, like Frank Underwood in House of Cards. That may be another option. I've been casually browsing different places for an old functional typewriter but haven't come up with one yet.

My handwriting is either completely awful or beautiful on random days for random reasons. It is always at least legible, which I think is key. If people have a hope of reading what you wrote, I think that a handwritten thank-you will always be the better and more honest option.

I prefer Crane's Kid-Finished in Pearl White. I have been known (LK, where are you?) to write with a dip pen and seal my letters with wax. But, most of the time I write with a ballpoint like a plebe, but really, the fact that I took the time to put pen to paper for real is what matters to the recipient.

My best tip for handwritten letters is to put your paper in a clipboard over a sheet of ruled paper. The lines show through and you get perfectly straight lines of writing!

This will sound kind of crazy but use a fountain pen with a really good nib. I know it sounds old fashioned but I write much better with a fountain pen rather than a ballpoint. Check out the Pen Habit on YouTube. He reviews a lot of fountain pens and inks.
