Unfortunately, I learned the hard way that the previous posters are right. Also, don't get fancy custom made clothing if you can't afford to take a loss if need be. It should not be this way but it is definitely a lesson I have learned. That being said, I don't subscribe to taking a loss lightly and if they did mess up you should complain and they should try to find a solution - it's very hard to comment on this on the internet though without knowing all the details and you have not even posted pics.

a bespoke item should be something which you absolutely love, find excuses to wear often even if not appropriate, adds swagger to your stride, garners compliments, and something you would rave about to anyone who cares to listen (or not!).........anything less than this is a waste IMO.

I'm hoping you are accepting of the situation and have moved on from it.

A few things missing, here.

1. If, as you say, you showed a sample to the tailor for button position, he should honor his mistake and make a new jacket.

2. I doubt the tailor has 1 1/4" to drop in the shoulder and, anyway, this would not work. If the jacket fits well, this means the balance is correct. If he drops the fronts on both side (absolutely not good on one side) then the balance is screwed. The coat will be longer in the front than the back and the fronts will swing away.

3. Right is right and wrong is wrong. If you've messed up, then it's up to the tailor to say he'll fix it in the hope of a long lasting relationship or you pay for your mistake. If he messed up, it's his duty to fix it. Very simple.

I cannot think. with the lack of business in and around Savile Row, that the tailor would argue about fixing something what is incorrect to try and keep a client. Perhaps, as a goodwill gesture, order a second suit a the same time!!!!

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
