Dear Sulka-How I miss the very brand ,I am interested in buying Sulka ties as many as you still have in stock , I was shocked to hear about Sulka boutiques have shut down- I can never forget this name since my childhood when my late father a civil servant from the days of the British Raaj in India, used to admire wearing Sulka ties from his collection.He used to feel proud & showed his collection boastfully to his collegues & friends.
I believe e-bay has some collection, I am planning to visit New York this August & then I will buy otherwise if I buy from you & you ship me then it will be stolen on the way? best regards - Goodtimes tunnu

Some pics of a Sulka cashmere overcoat by Saint Andrews that I discovered in close-to-pristine condition. The cashmere has a lovely feel to it and the handwork is impressive. Even more miraculously, it was my size - 42R. After tailoring at Wilfred's - taking in the waist and shortening the length just a bit - its one of my better fitting, and favorite, overcoats:

I began collecting Sulka as a result of this forvm a few years ago. Imagine my dismay that my favourite Sulka necktie is already giving up the ghost

Why did sulka close their doors. Because the guy running the show at the end
ran what was essentially a small business as if it was a multimillion dollar entity.


he spent richmont's money, as if there was no limits.
they had a huge office at 111 eighth ave. a fancy showroom for a wholesale line that never really got off the ground.


the so- called designer had no clue either.

Richmont had enough sense to cut their losses when they did.

Speaking of Dunhil ( Tobacco): Their takover of another venerable New York
institution , Dunhill Tailors, in the early 90s I believe, closed probably the most distinguished
bespoke operation in the city. My comments on this in an earlier post:

Dunhill Tailors

A wonderful store. In RTW they featured several models
which were basically a hybrid Saville Row/ Ivy League
look, eg. side vents but natural shoulders. I got a summer
suit there in the early 80s ... very elegant and distinctive.
I still have some of their shirts which look stylish 20 years later.
No one has mentioned , but I recall that their furnishings
department was staffed by delicious young females, a apt
counterpoint to the otherwise clubby atmosphere. After
their purchase by Dunhill ( Tobacco,etc.) the Manhattan
store still claimed to have the MTM and Bespoke service of
the original Dunhill Tailors. Into the 90s this store did have
try-ons of the Dunhull Tailors models. This service was not
available in the San Francisco store.
