Can't believe a thread I started 5 years ago is still hanging around.
I went with a Seiko 5 Sport with a leather band. The Orient Ray/Mako as suggested above was also on the radar. Fantastic automatic watch for ~$120 and going strong five years in. If compliment-to-price ratio is a metric, it would score top of the charts. Been commented upon many, many times more than a watch 10 and 20 times its price.
