Should my Zegna suit jacket be tailored on the back and/or sides?

I have a "slim" Zegna suit bought off the rack from Saks. I don't expect it to fit amazingly, but so far it feels OK, minus the annoyingly low arm holes/American style jacket.

So far, the only jacket alteration has been the sleeves which are perfect length now.

Going by my pics, should I have tailor bring in the sides or the back of the jacket (using the side seams, not taking in the middle back seam) just a little so it's more fitted looking? I am pretty fit and have a v-shaped torso and sloped shoulders, but it does feel like the jacket could be a tad more snug and hug my waist more. I also can't tell if it looks too loose from the back, with some of the vertical lines on the suit jacket, rather than the fabric being completely smooth on my back. I understand I can't get bespoke results here but I'm curious if the jacket looks a little big in the back and sides. Ignore the dress shirt sleeves, those are being shortened. Thanks very much.

Suit: 38 short, 'slim' fit
Height: 5ft 8 in
Weight: 155 lbs

The whole suit is already too tight. I bet the trousers will be a real pain to sit down in. I wouldn't recommend taking in anything.

Your back isn't suppose to be entirely smooth - you need fabric for movement.

For those that live in the USA - the suit will probably look too tight.
For those that live in Europe - you could probably take in the sides if there would still be enough space for you to move comfortably. I also don't like the upper part of the back - it looks like it's too wide for you. I wonder if it would be possible for the tailor to do some changes here too.

Interesting take. I'm from Europe and think it's too tight.

Thank you. Your comment is funny because this Zenga wool is amazing, yet Saks designed the pants to actually be too slim in the seat.

Thank you, yeah I probably reference too much Daniel Craig suits which we all know they purposely put him in suits that were way too small for his films I had the same thoughts about the back too. 36 short would be too small on me, I think my sloped shoulders makes the shoulder pads hang off a bit more, making the shoulder pads look too big from the back, but from the front the shoulders seem OK to me. Would taking in the middle back seam of the jacket bring in the shoulders a bit as a result?

I think a good tailor would probably be able to answer this question. I suggest you find one, go to him, put on your jacket, and then he can tell you what can and can't be done. In some cases, it's just not possible to make the adjustments. I had some jackets that I knew exactly how I wanted to fit me, but the tailor said it was impossible to achieve that because of the jacket's construction.

It depends on how the jacket fits, its construction, and its fabric. I have some bespoke jackets/suits that fit me like a glove, have high armholes, virtually no wrinkles and I feel very comfortable wearing them.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
