Lots of great information and really appreciated. I'm currently in the market for a pair of loafers for summer and I'm leaning toward the Crockett & Jones Harvard in dark brown shell. After reading how warm shell is compared to calf, I may buy calf loafers for summer and a dark brown shell for fall and winter.
Yeah, not ideal fot summer wear. Frankly, for summer, barring athletic shoes or special summer-only shoes like espadrilles, I think that lightweight, unlined, footwear, is probably best for summer. Something like the Church's Sahara might be a good choice for casual wear.

Thanks...I was thinking the C&J Harvard Penny Loafer in Pebble Grain for the office since we move to casual pants and polo shirts in the summer.

Unlined shell is perfect for summer wear imo/e. Reverse calf (suede made of full grain leather with the grain side facing inwards) is good too.

Perforated and woven leather are quintessentially made for summer, though getting hard to find in RTW.

I think unlined whiskey would be great. Lined wouldn't be so bad either imo. It stands to reason that shell would be more hot than calfskin, but I've never felt that way, and I've worn shell loafers in places like Indonesia w/ no problem. But maybe my feet don't run hot.

@starro, I think woven and perforated shoes are coming back.

Thanks...definitely prefer unlined loafer.
