Sorry if I misunderstand but will the pictures of the Ulster be online this weekend or will the Ulster be online for sale this weekend?

I'll certainly have some photographs to share this weekend, and there's half a chance the coats will be available for purchase, too.

It will probably be close to the herwick trench and the toggle coat, so 800-900 pounds. And a steal at that price, really.

Yep -- it is the result of a chain that encompasses multiple specialised steps, each involving skilled individuals who are either the best at what they do or, in fact, the only people in the world who do what they do!

For instance, the wool is from sheep raised in a traditional way in the Lake District. Theirs is a unique approach to sheep husbandry requiring specialised knowledge and attention, fostered over centuries. We then have similar niche expertise, by one or two very experienced people, in turning the fleece into yarn which can be woven.

There's then a single, highly qualified and experienced weaver who weaves the cloth (on old, hand / foot-powered contraptions from the Victorian age). Attaining this level of skill necessitates much dedication and experience.

We also strove to design and develop the coat itself to the highest standard. It has a unique style of construction, and a lot of time and effort went into balancing innovation with a good fit, good balance, and the other attributes of high-end garment development.

The pricing of the Ulster (as all our efforts) is a reflection of fair compensation extended to all individuals such as those mentioned above, and an unsung handful besides. Sara and I take pride in endorsing and sustaining this way of working, so the cost is a reflection not only of quality but also certain ethical principles underlying its making.

Speaking of duties, does anyone around here have experience importing into the US from SEH Kelly for items >$800 USD? My limited understanding is that for US customs orders <$800 USD are generally exempted from duties. But some pieces go above it (Duffle, Herdwick Trench, Ulster, etc). And I'm not sure what to expect as SEH does not handle that in the checkout process.

I searched the thread and found references to people ordering other pieces and not facing duties, but I'm unsure of those cases were pieces <$800USD.

That is the attraction of SEH Kelly for sure, Paul.

Im personally fascinated by traditional craftsmanship, attention to detail, local and genuine quality sourced materials. The transparency on this is nearly like a story, as you get insight into the journey from the design phase all the way through to the finished product. All of this is then offered at a very reasonable price, relatively speaking. You would pay significantly more for each item if offered from your traditional luxury brands with high street presence, baked in margins for discounting etc.

I don't own any SEH Kelly Pieces but just ordered the Cotton panama navy trousers. Excited to try them on soon

I didn’t pay duties on my herdwick trench IIRC. On the other hand, I did pay on the bal I ordered from Timothy Everest that was a collab with woveninbone, which was similarly priced.

Will the workshop re-open anytime soon?

Afraid not, sorry, no — I have gone from part-time shopkeeper / part-time factory boy to full-time the latter, and it is likely always to remain thus.

(The local council has also made it very difficult to operate a premises welcoming of customers!)

Thank you very, very much for taking the time to drop by (and all for such a measly, meagre outcome).

Your custom is very much appreciated and I'll enjoy wrapping those trousers on Monday, and they should be with you by the middle of the week, with the nice people from DHL contacting you as soon as they're en route.

I misread your message and thought you'd bought a balmacaan made with Herdwick cloth and began questioning the meaning of my existence.

Then I read the message properly and breathed a sigh of relief.

And THEN I thought about our balmacaan made with Herdwick tweed, and indeed all or any of our other coat styles which could in future be made with the cloth. Maybe next year we can all have a debate / vote about which one to make.
