I use Harbinger. I tend to have issues with dry skin, and if I use chalk it dries my hands out like crazy. Within a few hours I'll have hangnails on every finger. I don't mind calluses at all, but hangnails drive me nuts.

Gloves > straps. Straps really kill your chances of improving your grip.

Gloves just add a layer that can squish around. Straps used only on the heaviest sets make it so your grip doesn't prevent you from working the rest of your body.

On a girl maybe, and I'd argue that it doesn't matter. On a man, it shows you're not useless.

.

If you stop using straps and train your grip with actual grip work (not just deadlifts), you won't need the straps too much longer. This is coming from a guy who used to use straps.

This. Gripping the bar right + proper callus maintenance = no more tears.

A stitch in time saves nine. You need to take care of your calluses before they rip like that. Beastskills.com has a nice tutorial on how to take care of calluses before they rip. You don't need gloves if you take care of your hands.

I usually do heavy farmers walks for sets of 50 meters with 60 seconds rest in between. Every once in a while we'll do a met-con workout that involves carrying a set of dumbbells for a 400 meter farmer's walk - which is brutal. Other times, I'll load up the bar with maybe 125lbs, hold it for 20 seconds, rest for 10, hold it for 20, rest for 10 and repeat for 8 sets. My grip has improved tremendously since starting to do consistent grip work.
