Hello everyone!

This is my first time posting here. I am just dipping my foot into the world of menswear, which I’ve gotten into lately, and have been racking my brain over one thing in particular: where to get a new suit.

I need a navy suit for work, which is why I went down this rabbit hole. I want a classic, timeless, and sharp look. I really love the style of Assisi out of Seoul, but can’t travel to SK, and it’s out of my budget.

I have a budget of ~2,000 USD. I was thinking maybe the flagship Brooks Brothers made to measure, if anyone has experience with that? Or other NYC based recommendations?

I am not sure I need bespoke, but would appreciate advice on that too.

Brooks Brothers has gone through some rough times over the past 5-10 years and the days of Martin Greenfield-made custom suits is long past. I don't know who currently does their MTM program but I'd be very cautious.

More generally, why do you want/need custom (MTM or bespoke)? Do you have a difficult to fit body type? At your budget, I'd strongly recommend looking at RTW options first. Custom does not guarantee a good fit -- many examples here of people who've had bad experiences with custom. With RTW you can try on before buying; with custom you won't know exactly what you're getting until the suit has been made.

Since you're in NYC, I'd visit the Armoury and No Man Walks Alone -- you'll get good fitting advice there and some ideas on what kinds of suit silhouettes might work best on your body. I'll also mention SuitSupply because I think they have a no questions asked refund policy on their MTM suits but I'd double-check that.

I'd probably go to SuitSupply and try their RTW suits there first to see if they fit you well. I see no reason to spend that much money for the first suit unless you have a difficult to fit body type.

I'd avoid Brooks Brothers. Also, I'd only recommend going MTM if RTW doesn't fit you well. Lastly, remember, with MTM you're buying the fitter as much as the garment itself, without good help you'll still look bad regardless of the quality of the garment.

As others recommended, pop into The Armoury (TriBeCa and UES) or NMWA (midtown) and try one some of their RTW stuff. With their expertise and clothes you'll almost certainly be in better hands than if you went to any other RTW/MTM shop under the 2K price point.

On the lower end I'd recommend checking out J. Press and SuitSupply, they make nice stuff for the lower end of your budget but the people there won't be as good as The Armoury and NMWA

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
