A few weekends ago, I managed to pull not just one but both hamstrings while playing a pick-up game of football. I'd had a few beers, didn't stretch, and next thing you know, i'm playing, running, and soon, in pain. THey feel alot better now than they did a couple weeks ago. Can anyone tell me when I can start doing serious exercise again, such as a rowing machine or mountain biking? I assume jogging is out. How about skiing? Thanks.

Having had multiple injuries from a track career you really have to play it by ear. Make sure you're resting and icing if they're sore. Once they stop hurting during normal use start regular activity lightly and just increase slowly. You said it's been a few weekends so just try something out and if they bug you stop, if not keep going

Ouch! My friend, go see an orthopaedic specialist. You'll be surprised how long this injury can linger and continue to be in disrepair without professional input. The muscle can contract and you can lose that important and explosive first step without an intelligent campaign to stretch it out. Is your leg black and blue? You got problems walking down stairs?

I've pulled the same hamstring 10 years apart. The last time I waited 8 months before seeing an orthopaedic surgeon and only because I lost my first step in competitive handball. It hurt to move the leg beyond a certain point and my leg did not have the same power; I felt like a puppet on a string. It took me about 8 months of therapy including weekly stretching sessions with a physical thearapist. I'm glad I did it because I have the wholed stretching thing down.....as much as I want to jump right into the game as soon as I get to the courts.

Good luck!

Yeah, you should see a physical therapist. The muscle usually tightens up and restricts your range of motion so the next time you go to play, you are more likely to injure it. A PT should help restore the muscle's original flexibility and range of motion. Don't cut corners on the rehab because you will come to regret it.
