That is a cool watch. Given that you can buy it directly from Sea-Gull for $195, you could always pay a few bucks more to insure authenticity.

Actually, according to that link, seagullwatchstore.com is the one selling fakes. Or did you mean somewhere else?

Ancon, Helson, Makara are all pretty well known in the bronze case world. Really in a bronze watch I'm more after a certain look more than versatility and it suits divers by referencing old diving bells, portholes and such. I do like the Archimede pilots though, its also on the buy list, just a bit further down.

As has Halios. Discontinued, but it pops up on watchuseek classifieds a lot.

I think I would just not buy a Sea-Gull. How about a nice Seiko?

I have a Seiko 5, and was looking to try other cheap automatics... specifically with an open heart / semi-skeleton and power reserve indicator. There are plenty of Orient Stars like this, but they're an order of magnitude more expensive than a Seiko 5. I actually did just find a non-Star Orient that I like, the CFH01001, but it's more like $300:

They make fake Sea-Gulls? How does that even pencil?

I'm not sure it does. That thread sounded like a lot of it was just FUD, so I thought I'd seek a second opinion here.
