Not all are Japanese:
  • Orient Bambino
  • Kent Wang Bauhaus
  • Stowa Marine - SLIGHTLY higher pricerange + approx. 3 month wait-list + German
  • Stowa Antea - SLIGHTLY higher pricerange + approx. 3 month wait-list + German
  • Rodina (Chinese Nomos Glashutte homage) - Go back one page on this thread
  • Sea-gull M185S/M186S/M187S - Chinese
  • Daniel Wellington - Japanese Quartz / Swedish Brand. Simple, clean, cheap
  • Seiko 5
  • Junkers Bauhaus - German
  • Archimede DeckWatch - SLIGHTLY higher pricerange + German

Great list! Where can you get a Stowa Antea for "slightly" more than $500?

You can grab a new std model Antea direct from Stowa for just about $700 USD. Sometimes they'll pop up used for a bit less used on Watchuseek. Not much cheaper as a big selling point that drives the resale price up is not having to wait 3+ months. (I had to wait 4 months for my Stowa Marine Automatic due to an ETA movement shortage, it was rough!!)

I have to say I don't get the poor man watch thread, just like i I would not get poor man jewelry thread. Watches are useless functionally, we all carry cellphones . So a wristwatch is essentially man's jewelry. Why would you want to carry bland, uninspiring and cheap-looking watch on your wrist is beyond my understanding. Save some money and buy classic & beautiful watch of which there are many, instead of adding to the landfill of modern junk.

Wristwatches are not useless. Allow you to see the time in a more subtle way than pulling out your cell phone. A mechanical watch will continue to work if your cell phone battery runs out of power. An analog watch cannot only be used to tell the time but to determine direction.

Additionally there are many watches available for under a thousand dollars which are characterized by great design and craftsmanship.

I don't suppose anyone here works at McGraw-Hill? We could take this guy and Reevolving out for burritos. Then leave them stuck in the elevator over the weekend.

There is a lot of crap out there but there are some incredible values.

For instance, I just got an Orient classic power reserve. The design is extremely well executed. To get something objectively better horologically, you'd nearly have to add a zero to the price.

You sound like a bit of a brand whore with the jewellery analogy so, by all means, buy that Bulgari. Someone who appreciated design and watchmaking can be very (intelligently) happy with a cheaper watch.

Any recommendations in this list or others for a smaller wrist?

Out of that list, I'd suggest:

Orient Bambino - MAY be a stretch as the face is large ~40mm or so, but for some reason it seems to wear small on my wrist, its all dial, not chunky.
Stowa Antea
Rodina
Sea-gull M185S/M186S/M187S - This may be the best bet.. Theyre all ~38mm. Great size
Seiko 5 - These are ~38mm as well
