If it makes you feel any better, I always pay the VAT for my Italy purchases, bespoke included. I figure, why bother?

If you're in the states, the way I always reason it, it costs them a lot to travel back & forth. I don't mind paying for that. Its a convenience fee, I suppose.

I had a heated argument with a shoemaker in the Florence area about this once. I chalked it up to him trying to scam me and refused to place an order.

What was their argument (other than 22% profit)?

If you are having a product shipped outside the EU, then the retailer is not required to collect VAT. If you purchase a product inside the EU (in person) and you reside outside the EU, you may request a refund of the VAT at the port of exit (and hence the widespread use of "tax free shopping" signs all over London and elsewhere).

The only retailer I have experienced that charged me VAT when I bought something from them via the internet was La Portegna. I will never purchase anything from them again.

From a fitting with Steed last Monday in San Francisco. The fabric is @dieworkwear's "other" cloth that he had made in 2016, a navy blue houndstooth "fresco" cloth. This is being made up into a summer jacket for me. It will be finished with blue MOP buttons and a fun lining. I don't know why I always look so glum in these fitting photos.

Also, I've not seen any pictures of this cloth made up. Has anyone finished a suit or jacket from it?

If you don't mind me asking, why didn't you decide to order the entire suit?

I don't mind at all.

I just didn't see this particular cloth as a suit. I thought (and still think) it will be a fine alternative to a summer blazer (an item I have never really gotten along with). So, I bought 2.5 meters from Derek last year and had Steed begin making it up for a fitting this week.

I know some object to fresco as sportcoat, but I wear my fresco suit as a separate pretty frequently - and it would look substantially better if I had appropriate buttons.

I didn't know if you intended to have trousers made up by one of your other tailors.

I didn't know there were objections to Fresco as an odd jacket. That seems silly, especially for a patterned cloth. But, no, I never intended to have trousers made up. Even though I am having it made with flap pockets and so on, I don't think it will look like an orphan suit jacket.

I have worn the trousers of my tan fresco suit as odd trousers once or twice, and I seem to recall doing the same with the jacket. Doesn't bother me at all. I think this dieworkwear jacket will resemble an English blazer from a distance, minus the brass buttons.

Maybe someone with a suit length will post someday.

I have a full suit made up from it, I think there's a photo or two from the fittings on my insta. Very nice stuff. Now I'm just sad that I didn't order a full suit length of cloth of the DWW brown Fresco as well, as I have to make do with only the pants :(

Very cool. I went through your entire IG, but didn't see anything that I could identify as the DWW navy houndstooth. Followed you, though.
