I was in Philly this weekend and bought two shirts (luckily on sale). When I arrived home I realized that the collar stays are permanently sewn into the collars. I have never owned a shirt with sewn-in stays.

Are there any special laundering instructions I should know before washing them? Will there be marks left on the collars after ironing the shirts?

I have a few like this. I wash them in cold water cycle, then let hang dry.
When ironing, I lower the heat to 'wool' setting. Less heat and less pressure and you'll be fine.

The laundry once pressed a shirt of mine without removing the stays and it left an shiny impression of the stay on the collar point. Quite unsightly. I suppose it would just take a small incision to convert the stay's status to removable.

Had a shirt like that in the past. Didn't have any problems - in fact I liked it, as I never forgot to remove my collar stays when I washed the shirt. I think you'll find it to be no problem.

The problem is, with those non-removable stays, they are often glued in place. Eventually the washing or dry cleaning will break down the glue and the stays won't stay where they are supposed to be, but will float around in your collar. That's the time to toss your shirt.

Cutting them out makes no sense because their usually isn't a sleeve for them to go in and out of. And there's the stupid glue issue again.

^From my experience they were never glued.
The only problem you could have is that the tip of the collar stay might break the fabric of the shirt (during washing). Dry cleaning and ironing on low temp and you will be ok

When I didn't know better, the shirts I made had non-removable collar stays sewn in. Nothing happened during regular washing. No marks after ironing too.

I have a few that came with non-removable stays. They were sewn in so there was a 'pocket'...it just wasn't open at the top. A razor blade fixed that.
