Aye those guardsmen’s tunics had a moment during the revival. I seem to remember Carnaby Cavern knocking out their version, possibly via those quarter page ads they had every week in Sounds, NME and Melody Maker.
I haven’t looked at the Sherry’s London website in a while but I seem to remember they did a version too.
Did the Beatles not wear a grey version of this style around the time of their final gig at Shea Stadium?
That one in the pic looks a bit more genuine with the shoulder boards. Might have been a cool pickup from a surplus shop.

We used to call them Zulu jackets after the film. I remember Whistling Jack Smith of "I Was Kaiser Bill's Batman" fame wore one on "the box". The only time I ever saw one being worn on the street in the 60's was on a bloke in Forest Gate, East London - probably on his way to The Upper Cut .

Believe it or not I tried one on in a boutique in Blackpool in 1967.

Yeah , the one on the coat peg certainly looks like the real deal to me , there is just something authentic about it. .
I remember seeing a guy at a night out wearing a black one , many years ago , which l think he said was either from a cavalry regiment or the Royal Artillery. .

This fella has just bought one :

And there's a whole rack of them for sale at 5:52. (The Lane 1967)
Bloke at 0:56 wearing one as well.
Definitely a 1967 thing. Maybe something to do with them being featured in the Strawberry Fields promo film in Feb '67

Pause that film at 4:11 - looks like mods with couple of early skinhead types . College boy cut and navy v neck .

I have a pair of those. It's really nice, supple full grain leather (not the typical plastic-y DM/Solovair leather). The sole is not airwair, but a composite sole made with the airwair tread. Really comfortable and looks great
Hi Get Smart,
Just wondering how the sizing works on these as I can’t seem to find a decent answer. My regular shoe size is a UK 7. However, here is my sizing in boots that I wear:

  • Clarks Desert Books: UK 6.5
  • Dr. Martens (Made in England 1460) 8 Hole Boots: UK 6/US7

My question is would I need to size down from a UK 7 to a UK 6/US 7 in the Solovair boots in order to get a good fit?

For me and nearly everyone I know who wears both, we wear same size in Solovair as I do in Dr Martens. so I would recommend sticking to same DM size for Solovair
