Matching Groomsmen Tuxedos

I have a beautiful Armani tuxedo I love, and plan to wear at my wedding in two months, but I have a bit of a dilemma. Armani’s notch tuxedo is actually a bit of a hybrid, and I’m having trouble deciding whether to match with groomsmen in notch or peak styles. Different opinions from different groomsmen so far…

My tuxedo (forgive the hangar) and the two rental options pictured below. My considerations are:
  • Outdoor ceremony and cocktail hour in late afternoon with indoor evening reception to follow
  • Black tie optional event for guests
  • Would like myself and my groomsmen to wear matching pocket squares and black bow ties
I’m leaning notch at the moment due to the slanted breast pocket matching my own, since I think that would make a cleaner “match” for the pocket squares. But if the peak lapel is a nicer groomsman look, I think nice boutonnières for all of us would eliminate the need for the pocket squares at all?

Generally I have not seen many people on SF who prefer notch lapels on a tux. I also tend to not like them. Peak or shawl.

Re: matching. Groomsmen do not need to match. Black tie is already a code. There is no need to have everyone have the same lapels.

For my wedding I wore peak, 3 of my groomsmen choose peak and another choose shawl.

I agree. I don't see a need for all groomsmen to have matching lapels. The truth is, after everyone looks at the wedding photos once, no one is going to notice or care about groomsmen/bridesmaids and how they looked again. You and the bride are all that matters (well, the bride really - you're second fiddle).

Resist the urge to match tuxedoes. Just tell your groomsmen to wear one—their own or a rental of their choice if they don’t own one and aren’t ready to invest in an essential component of a gentleman’s wardrobe. (You won’t find much love for rented formal wear on SF.)

There is only one color pocket square for a tuxedo and that is white. Preferably silk but linen will not result in scandal.

Traditionally a tuxedo is not worn in the afternoon, but local police departments have lately been reluctant to enforce this.

My two cents: A white pocket square is classic but adding color can work well. (Sinatra preferred orange) A boutonniere looks great with a pocket square.
Best of luck with the wedding!

"Outdoor ceremony and cocktail hour in late afternoon with indoor evening reception to follow" authorizes black tie for the whole affair. Unless the guests bring their valets and ladies-maids, one cannot expect them to change their attire before the evening reception.
