Notre Dame's statement:

"On Dec. 26, Notre Dame coaches were informed by Manti Te’o and his parents that Manti had been the victim of what appears to be a hoax in which someone using the fictitious name Lennay Kekua apparently ingratiated herself with Manti and then conspired with others to lead him to believe she had tragically died of leukemia. The University immediately initiated an investigation to assist Manti and his family in discovering the motive for and nature of this hoax. While the proper authorities will continue to investigate this troubling matter, this appears to be, at a minimum, a sad and very cruel deception to entertain its perpetrators."

This is getting weird. Either kids these days are cool with "dating" someone they've never met for an extended period of time or Manti is full of crap.

There are only 2 possibilities that make sense:

1) It's an elaborate publicity stunt gone wrong

2) It's an elaborate attempt to stay in the closet gone wrong.

Wow, the editors for The South Bend Tribune need to be shot. Those quotes are painfully bad. It's depressing enough that the writer turned in stories that sound like they came out of a 14 year old girl's diary, but then an editor read it and said, "yeah, let's print that" is just awful.

sounds like your speaking from experience :uhoh:

I'm trying to figure out which story I am more nonplussed about, this or the lance armstrong one.

If Te'o was involved in the hoax, and I believe he was, what he did was really, really dumb. It wasn't a crime and it didn't affect the integrity of the game. At worst, it's on the level of what Cam Newton did to get booted out of Florida (plagiarism, buying a stolen laptop). And we all know how badly that damaged Newton's draft status.

This is the weirdest story I've read in a long time. And I just got done rereading all the weird stories in the "reasons why Florida is #1" thread

I had the good sense to claim my girlfriend was in another country doing missionary work. :teach:
