Linen socks, your thoughts

Uniqlo might have OTC boot socks in synthetic but that's it. To me they are great conservative socks except for the fact that they are mid-calf. I don't know if you have showy or conservative tastes in socks, but I gravitate towards grays, blues, browns, olives, tans, and the occasional purple; Uniqlo matches this color palette quite well. Pre-pandemic you could get their 80-90% Supima socks, in those colors, often with interesting weaves like pique, diagonal clocks, jacquards etc. for <$3 on sale. Those were the days

And despite wearing Uniqlo most of the time for the last 7-8 years, not one pair wore out or is wearing thin (a few are showing busted elastic at the top, but the socks are still very wearable). So it's easy to forgive their short lengths. After all, knee-length socks are finicky to fit properly: this pair is not long enough, this pair is too tight around the calf and uncomfortable, that pair is too loose and falls down over the course of the day...

I agree, Uniqlo socks are also my first choice. They aren’t as soft to the touch at first as, for example, socks from Bresciani, but within five minutes of putting them on, you won’t notice any significant difference. They are comfortable to wear all day and last a really long time in good condition, so the cost per wear is incomparable to luxury socks.

Different strokes, different approaches. Not saying that Uniqlo socks are bad, but they simply don't fullfill my expectations for quality ones. As I said, I only wear over the calf socks in tailored size, and for that quantum of luxury I'm well willing to spend a little more.

I am guessing that linen socks in particular need to be the correct size, as they don’t stretch as gracefully as wool.

I like the Pantherella Hamada linen/cotton blend very much. They are thin and stay up well. I have had great luck with the Pantherella cotton lisle and they wear forever. I never wear their wool socks anymore. I have a couple of pairs of Bresciani but much prefer the Pantherella for dress and every day.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
