Funny story, I bought a Uniqlo thermal via eBay before they had stores in the USA and its a a size medium.
Recently I bought some more Uniqlo thermals in USA, size XS and S, guess what the XS (which really should be a regular size S in the USA but vanity sizing sigh) lined up perfectly with a size M from Japan. Anyways I wanted a tighter fit and the thermal stretches so its fine but regardless I find that funny.
Yes well I often end up buying spare tees at Uniqlo in SE asia (various markets) and they're roughly one size smaller than EU sizing. Dunno if they just scale down one size but for a super sharp retailer like Uniqlo I assume it is a little bit more efficiently tweaked than this. As a consumer though I just do a one size up switch in SE asia markets and it works fine.
