Is this Oxxford suit worth altering?

Thanks for all the feedback, gents.

I do feel if the suit is a good one (which this is) and the cut & Fit are close before alterations begin (which I am not so sure about - probably not in this case), then I consider the idea sound and would be willing to spend some reasonable cash to get it done up right.

Having said that I have had mixed results from Wilfred's. One example - a suit i bought at Macy's had functional sleeve buttons, but the sleeves were a good 1-2" too long, maybe more for those of us who want shirt sleeves generously visible (I do). I bought the suit because it was a great holiday sale (I got a good 40% off), but kept the tags on till I brought it to the tailor to ascertain whether sleeves could be shortened with functional buttons. They assured me several times it would be no problem, even though it seemed logical to me that without major surgery and adding new button holes up the arm, they could only shorten by perhaps 1/2-3/4". Sure enough I paid for the work and got back a coat with sleeves that had been only slightly shortened. etc etc.

I know there are other tailors in town, but I am thinking they;d all charge about the same price.

I will post some pics my wife took tonight and if I could impose a bit more I'd love any feedback that will help me make my final decision....

I should show the pants - it has a very long rise which I find comfortable but not sure that is the best look for me. I am currently 212 pounds, 38 Waist; I need to lose another 40-50 pounds which will put me at 34" waist.

I have wide hips in any case, so not sure if flat front pants are a good choice on me - at least not when worn at that height?

It looks like you're wearing the pants a little too high, it makes your torso look very short, unless that's where you always wear them . . . .

I am not sure this suit fits you well, it looks too roomy for you . . . . but I'm no expert, other more experienced forumites might be able to advise better . . . but my inlcling would be to sell it . . .

If you are bent on altering the jacket, from a purely proportion perspective, I think you might be able to shorten it just under 1" w/o throwing off the pocket stance . . . . again just MHO

I usually wear pants on the waist, but these probably are sitting a bit higher, by an inch or so....

The jacket is waaay too long on you--sorry. Looks like it would need to be somewhere between 1 1/2" to 2" shorter. That's too much. If I were in your situation, I would move on.

^ +1. The jacket looks way too and taking off too much will definitely throw off the balance of it. Too much to do and it will certainly be costly. Try to sell it and move on.

I would suggest sell it to a second hand shop or burn it

Sell it.

Get a suit that fits your current size when you hit your target weight. Tailoring should be subtle [a little here a little there].

Good luck!

Thanks guys, I appreciate the brutal honesty - I need that a lot more than the usual - "oh, it's not so bad" stuff. I know I need to get all the way down to 150 or so before I'll look right in a suit. I imagine my others will look too baggy as well by then....I'll need to have a fire sale.

Of course, it will be worth it for the health benefits alone.
