Is it acceptable to wear a suit to a field trip?

I am a senior in high school and I was wondering If it is appropriate to wear a suit (no tie) to my investment's class field trip which is to the Chicago board of trade. we will also be visiting the federal reserve bank. Is a gray suit faded pink button up and black pants/shoes be acceptable or will people laugh at me?

It'll look contrived. Don't do it.

****... I did stuff like this in HS though, so maybe you shouldn't listen to me.

Depends, if you are the cool 'cock of the walk' that everyone loves you could pull it off. If you are not then tone it down. Sweater and shirt with jeans and decent shoes might look better.

Do you typically overdress for school? I mean if you wear pants and button downs tucked in then it seems less contrived than if you are jeans, kicks, and LRG shirts normally.

To impress your 'friends', wear crap like they do. To impress yourself and the people you meet on this trip, wear a sport jacket if you have one, and a shirt with a BD collar. Hey you know what? wear the suit and let your school mates laugh. You know why? The future.... 10% of them will end up in prison 10% of them will be unemployed 78% of them will end up with crappy underpaid jobs and only 2% (of which you will be a part if you lead and not follow) will own businesses. See who's laughing then. When on your field trip, take a notepad and get names and phone numbers/email addy's of those you may want to contact in the future for a job. People at this bank will remember you favourably.

I think that this is a bit ridiculous. If an entire high school class visits a bank / CBOT, the chances of any professional remembering the one in a suit is minimal. As a pretty recent college graduate, I've seen both sides of the recruiting process. It's hard to stand out as a candidate in a group setting. (and if you did, you probably made a glaring mistake). On the other side, I don't really remember anyone in particular that I meet in info sessions.

That being said, wear a suit if you want. Just don't count on any sort of lasting impression or career benefit from it. Weigh that against the **** you'll take from you peers, and see if it's worth it to you.

go ahead, I would say it is appropriate to do this. I am surprised that the school has not advised students to dress nice since it it is usualy customary to do so. I would not let anyone else get in your way, if you want to do what you think is right then I say do it.

Just to clarify, a "suit" is matching jacket and pants. If your suit is gray and your pants are black either you are not wearing a suit or you're wearing two pairs of pants. Or, third option, are you talking about wearing an orphaned suit jacket with odd trousers? If the latter, I'm not fond of mixing suit pieces with non-suit pieces. Typical suiting fabrics, IMO, tend not to work well without their matching other half. It is a look that takes skill to pull off. Sometimes it works, mostly I think it's a fail.

What does the jacket look like? Is it not a suit piece at all but a gray sport coat, like a herringbone or a tweed? If so, then you're in a different ballpark. That combo would look good, dressy, but crisply casual. Quite appropriate for the day in my book.

one time in high school a buddy wore a suit and tie to class on valentines day to impress a girl. everyone laughed at him. 2 weeks later he was ******* the girl. the next year, about a dozen fellas were wearing suits on valentines day.

Wear what the **** you want. Trust me. One thing I learned about high school after I got out of it, nobody ******* matters at all. Except you. I wish I cared less about what people thought in high school. Enjoy yourself!
