I ran across this post earlier today and wanted you guys to see it, I know none of us here are guilty of this but I can't tell you how many of my employees are guilty of this. I am thinking of circulating it to all of them via email to give them a hint, since direct approach dosen't seem to be working. I was just curious to see what you guys though of this and if you had to deal with this issue as well.

The article is interesting.

I work/manage in a business casual environment so the article may be a bit off topic for my office. I have been trying to deal with the issue of definition of 'business casual'! I am just trying to fight the rear-guard action against shorts/flip-flops/baseball caps...jeans with a collared shirt (polo) is a win in my books right now. For reference we are an IT/IS services company (niche) based in SLC, UT.

After 7 years of working from home I was looking forward to an office but now it's just a drag...my only sartorial ally (classic prepster) moved out of my office.

This is a very interesting article, I have dealt with this issue before in the office. I am in charge of the section I work at and get to decide what my employess are going to wear, which is just great. If they were in charge I know they would just show up in jeans and t's if they could which I just don't think is professional at all. I require that all my men wear at least a shirt and tie daily, I let them loose the ties on fridays and my ladies all wear skirt or slacks and a nice blouse or sweater or something.

^ Do you actually attempt to enforce what that "article" talks about? Fit of the trouser, quality of the tie?

Much of what he calls "faux pas" is merely stylistic opinion. "A cheap necktie stands out like a sore thumb?"

A simple Macy cheap rep stripe will go unnoticed by 99%.

A lot of generic blathering with not a lot of good, specific directions.

I don't think he meant to be so litteral with his response. Where I work I try to enforce things like no clip on or short sleeve shirts. Things that don't really belong in a professional environment.

Archer is awesome. Nice.

And completely agree. The 1% are on this board. Not wearing a 7-fold tie to work is a faux pas?

Style extends further than the clothes we wear. Subjecting someone to our advice on their "faux pas" is NOT stylish. Give credit for effort. Even when people ask for advice, give it tactfully. Don't put off the "stop wearing square-toes and marvel at my CJs" attitude.

Maybe your direct approach isn't working because it's tackier than their "flattened collars".

I can only begin to imagine the living hell that must be working for Bowtielover. Anyone who finds himself in that position must have done something to deserve it.

Did no one else notice that Bowtielover made a new account called bowtieguy to revive this thread?

Astonishing.

I'm literally sitting here slackjawed, and now riveted to this thread.

Never thought I'd miss the Bowtielover's old avatar, but these new ones have me creeped out. Is that actually a toupee in the wild?

i have an idea. BTL, i suggest you recruit bowtieguy85 to propagate the message and spread the tough love. that way you can "keep your hands clean", so to speak. it's a time-tested managerial best practice.

The only points that seemed relevant were the one about baggy suit pants and the one about inappropriate belts. The other points seem silly. I see LOTS of men wearing pants that they did a bad job of buying off of the rack. The guy probably went to the section with his waist size, picked up a few pairs of pants and thought "I can make these work."

The author seems to think that excess cloth is at the root of all trouser problems.
