Hey Guys,

I hope some of you can give me some advice. I thought I was fashion conscious until I read some of these posts, a lot of you have some really great advice. Here's my dilemma: I need a new overcoat (wool and cashmere blend) and cannot find one that is stylish, fits, good quality, and about $1,300. I am a size 36 and live in Vancouver Canada so not a great selection of menswear. I found 3 that came close. All of them are Hugo Boss (from some of the other posts, not your favorite brand- but this is all I could find in stores).

The first pic is $1095. It fits great and I like the wide collar and the thin lapel because its more stylish for someone my age of 20yrs old and I think looks better because I'm thinner build.

The second pic is really just up for comparison purposes. If I remember correct, its is a 38 so it fits big (they can order the 36 though). Its the cheapest at $800. Fabric does not feel as nice.

The third jacket I forgot to take a pic. It is $1000 and is like 3 styles in one. Naturally it is more like the second pic. Bigger lapel with a medium size collar, but it is able to be buttoned up if needed so it looks similar to the first pic with the skinnier lapel but the collar stays med width (I like the style of first pic best, but this jacket comes pretty close when buttoned up). And if it is buttoned up all the way i can hook the collars together with a metal hook (which is visible on the collar when undone, can be removed though if wanted) and gives it the Manarin style. Material is on par with the first jacket.

Not sure what I should get, the first jacket or the third one (only because it can do the 3 diff styles- and is $100 cheaper but that's not too big a deal). What do you guys think??? I went to all the major designer stores and this is all that is available on the rack. There are a couple of Canali and Dolce Gabanna jackets but the style is a thin lapel and thin collar, which I don't think looks as good on me because they seem suited more for some one older and bigger built. I need one for the upcoming winter and would prefer to wait for sale, but since my size is so limited I may be forced to buy at retail because the last two years all my sizes were gone before the sales even started. O ya, in Canada things cost about 30+% more than our American friends, so to some of you these prices might seem high for a typical Hugo Boss but that is our market price because Canadians are suckers lol.

no on both pictures. the lapel/collar shrunk your head/physique out of proportion. being size 36 with a small head, you should try to have a relatively thinner lapel to shift attention to your face.

the first jacket was wearing you. appears as if you been bagged by the jacket.

the second jacket was better, but its too big.

search around a bit, there must be something decent at Vancouver.

Thanks for the opinion vitamin. I thought the wider collar was better for thinner people (according to GQ), I'll try taking a better look with a thinner lapel and collar keeping what you said in mind. Ya Vancouver sucks for getting decent clothes. Toronto and Montreal are the only cities to get anything relatively decent. I might be going to Seattle next weekend and they should have a much better variety.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
