How much do you work?

i focus for about an hour a day, then chill for the other 5.5 while my automated software does all the work for me

but i only got to this point after working non-stop every waking hour for over a year

Given that I'm working at 3 AM on a Thursday night/Friday morning, I'll have to say that I probably work way more than I should probably be...

There are 168 hours in a week. Lets say that you spend 49 of them sleeping. You now have 119 hours to pursue whatever you wish.

Your "career", as you say, demands on average a 60 hour work week. You now have 59 hours to spare. Factor in a 30 minute commute each way and a 1 hour lunch (assume working 6 days a week). Now you're down to 47 hours.

Of these 47 hours, 17 are allocated to your Sunday. That leaves 30 hours, or 5 hours a day to do whatever you want for the rest of your week. And I'm not even including showering, getting ready for your "career", eating, or using the bathroom.

That's not a career. It's a lifestyle. You are spending somewhere between 1.5x to 2x the time at your career than with loved ones, friends, just relaxing, striking up hobbies, or doing anything else you want. If you're not compensated handsomely for this, then I pity you.

And btw, if your career is something you love, then congratulations. Mine is something I am absolutely passionate about. But I'm more passionate about my family and friends, and I would rather enjoy my life with the people who have close relationships to me (and have for my entire life) than advancing in my "career".

+1 To the poster above, there's no need to be condescending to those of us who work 60+ hours. the pay is decent (not great). it all depends on what you gain value from. Also, sometimes, it's not a choice of enjoying your life with friends and family. Sometimes, it's a choice between working those hours and going home. Sure you can say "find another job" but the job market isn't as good as it used to be. It's better than 1 year ago, but it's still difficult to find a job.

You're right. It's not my place to judge someone based on how much they work. Perhaps its just the whole "e-dick" that a lot of people seem to have about working so many hours in a week that pisses me off a bit. I apologize, though. To each his own.

I was a chemist for a few years, then found I could make more money in sales. Did that for about 20 years. At about year 15, I stumbled upon a niche that nobody was covering.
