Isn't a politicians tie just a silk single color tie? I think there are a lot more variations/styles of a tie that wouldn't go out of style.

Not really. You see simple stripes or simple dots as well - usually in very safe colors of blue, red. The very simple color and pattern choices are made for a reason. Those simple stripe or simple dot patterns will stay in style, yes. But, not everyone wants their entire collection to be those style of ties. It's great if you do. It's also great if you don't.

I'd say 4 is an absolute minimum for a daily or 4x per week suit wearer.

I would not limit the number of suits or sports jackets in my closet although I would keep in mind one's presentation of self (in a professional setting especially) should not be across the board as far as style and color because a more balanced and cohesive wardrobe allows those around you to build upon the first visual impression of you rather than often be presented with the task of acquiring it.
