How hard is it to tailor a suit sleeve from the top?

It takes me a long time to go to get to a good tailor and I need the sleeve of a suit jacket shortened. How difficult of a procedure is it for a tailor to cut it at the top, shorten it there, and reattach it? Would your average tailor be able to do it?

Yeah the one tailor I know here in AZ told me there's no way they could lengthen or shorten from the sleeve. They asked who said that was possible and gave me **** about it.

AZ tailors suck.

My question is, would you trust your average local tailor to do the job, or only go to a reputed tailor because of difficulty (is it?) of the procedure?

Do you have working buttonholes right now?

Nope. But I don't think it can be shortened the other way- the faux buttonholes will remain at the end of the sleeve without the buttons, the cut in the sleeve will likely be altered, the new buttonholes will be different from the old ones, etc. Or am I wrong?

It is not difficult but requires skill. Few alteration 'tailors', if they are even worthy of using the title 'tailor' are capable. It takes time and you pay for the far higher level of skill.

Isn't the fake buttonholes just thread?

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
