Those numbers tell you if an armhole is "high" or not.

It does not tell you if the jacket is cut or altered correctly for a particular person in particular style of construction.

If the differential number is high, you do not have a high armhole.

The sleeves on those coats are very slim and hang straight when my arm is at rest. The armholes are relatively high, especially for RTW. I believe in my case, the way the armholes are cut (oval in lieu of tear shaped) is what has caused the issue.

Can someone post a picture of themselves wearing a properly fit bespoke suit with their arms spread "wing-span" style? Similar to the picture of Astair on the first page of this thread. I'd like to see how much the front of the coat bunches and rides up when this is done with a well-cut coat.

(I don't think the picture of Astair is ideal given that he is in motion and his coat is A&S, which is famously extreme in designing its armholes for movement...)

I have got the impression that this aspect of fit isn't given as much thought as it should, even among the bespoke crowd here.

Yes. I am becoming aware that it is one of the things that only bespoke can properly address, as well. I have some very good MTM that look as good as anything I see here regularly in profile. And they have high armholes. But when I reach above my shoulders the coat rides up a bit too much - I wonder how much your "average" bespoke coat rides up when one reaches high...

I just watched the Smooth Criminal video and noticed Mike's jacket barely budged even though he threw his arms high above his head numerous times. It was unbuttoned but that seemingly made no difference.

I watched the video too. The coat doesn't move much, but it does move noticeably. I'd still like to see a photo of someone wearing a recent bespoke with their arms spread eagle...

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
