Hey everyone, I could use some advice as I try to expand my current shoe collection. I'm in need of a brown dress shoe; I currently have black oxfords, as well as chukkas, loafers, and a service boot, all in various shades of brown. What I don't have is a brown dress shoe that I can wear with suits or dressier business casual/slacks/etc. I'm looking for something that is as versatile as possible.

My budget is reasonable, I certainly don't mind shelling out a couple hundred dollars for a good pair of shoes that will last me a long time, but I don't have shell cordovan money.

How about a brown Adelaide?
Depending on the level of formality of your workplace, you might just get a suede one instead.

Where are you located? While you might be able to pick up a decent pair of shoes for at/around $300 you might have to order online and then sizing can be tricky.
Brown has come a long way but I would still stick with a darker pair. The shoe Salmoche suggested has enough formality and darkness for most suits. Burgundy is also a nice color.

Perhaps George model from Sons Of Henrey. Probably some of the most versatile shoes you can get, not quite as good with a suit than proper cap toes but good enough and easier to wear with more casual pants:

I dislike oxfords. So here are two derby styles that are out of your price
range but may give an idea of your options.

Agree with a derby. Dark brown if you want to wear with tailored clothing. I was also going to suggest a split-toe derby. The Sons of Henrey model posted above would be a great choice at a reasonable price. You'll probably need to spend closer to $300 for a decently made shoe.

Lots of good choices on Allen Edmonds Black Friday Sale for $199.

Jeff

Some style examples; not available models. The one second from the right shows how the light stitching can make a cap toe less formal. The far right is casual only with its sole.

Visible Pick Stitching on Lapels and Pockets

  • It’s a mark of quality and craftsmanship

  • I like it when it’s subtle

  • I don’t like visible stitching

  • Doesn’t matter to me
