My very first sales was working as a sales agent for Erols internet.

Sometimes customers would call and demand I personally gave them tech support even though it was a sales only line.

This was also my very first commision job and I got very good at it.
I had the psychic ability to pickup the phone before anyone else and even the customers on the line would exclaim that the phone did not even ring yet when I picked up the handset.

Many co workers get so angry and they would be yelling at me. Give us a chance man we need money too! One time in just 1 week I made $3,000

That was just before cameras on cellphones were famous or I would have posted a pic.

1996...... Quake was the best game on the market.

One time nobody could sign on. Turned out someone in the server room yanked all the memory out of the unsecured servers.

Erol Onaran divorced his wife so he could party with asian girls.
He knew of me and my circle of asian girls and many times invited me but I refused.

My bad, my tired self read that as being an ass for the last two weeks or something like that.

In any case, they do have your number and personal info with them on your resume.

I thought of this too. I moved to Toronto for work and have a stable job during regular business hours. I wanted to get a job at Holt Renfrew for part-time sales help on weekends just for something to do and get discounts on clothing. I've never done competitive commissions sales before but if I was bad and they fired me I wouldn't care, but I'd make sure I picked up a few suits before I left.

I sent my resume in online and never heard anything back. I realize I have no sales experience like they ask for, but I figured since I'm educated and knowledgeable of how to properly speak to their type of clients this might translate. Apparently not.

I have always found it pretty easy to get a job in retail as and when the need has presented itself - although usually I go for shoe shops!

Have you guys ever thought about getting a crap job and seeing how far you can push things before you get fired? I've thought about finding a job, being super polite, working hard for 2 weeks, make friends with a lot of people you work with, and then dropping a bomb.

Start slowly breaking the rules and doing strange things. Wear completely absurd clothes to work. Just walk away from your job for like 30 minutes without saying a word. Start doing a really bad job and when confronted act really polite and play dumb. Just do whatever entertains you while at work. My guess is that you could probably get away with stuff like that for 2 weeks without being fired, depending on where you are at.

I did this for over 6 months AND quit on good terms. It gave me supreme confidence in that as long as you kiss ass and do the right things sometimes, you can really do whatever the **** you want if you're under the radar.

Will retail spots actually turn you down if you're overqualified, but you don't mind taking the same pay? Do they actually want to hire flaky high schoolers / disgruntled people in their 40's?

Having done some hiring in retail, I'd say the answer is yes to the first question and no to the second.

There are loads of people working in retail who have university degrees. In and of itself, a degree won't get you stricken from the call-back list. But an applicant for a sales associate position with a good degree (or degrees) who has excellent professional work experience and an engaging demeanour is likely only looking for a stopgap position. Most hiring managers will make the mistake of hiring such a candidate once or twice before realizing it's not worth the expense of bringing in someone who probably won't last more than a month.

i work at a high end retail store. its really not bad at all, as its much less traffic etc than a gap or something because youre not selling $ 10 t shirts etc. many of the sales have degrees, and many make a good amount of cash. a million dollar seller will pull in around 90,000 a year maybe more.

Ya, when i was really dissatisfied at work, I was considering applying for a job in high-end retail, but as SoCal said, they're strictly full-time. My guy at Harry Rosen was making around 70k/yr, and he barely had to work at that poitn because he had built-up a list of good clients that always came back to him (me included). He had gotten to the point where he didn't really have to sell, which really just helped him sell more. At least at HR, with 10% commissions, you can do well if you're good. I still think about it from time to time and I'm pretty sure I could get a job there if I ever wanted one. I'm more interested in buying though.
