I think Claghorn wins for his dead mongoose wrap or whatever that weird Japanaese thing that was. Designed by the creator of Pokemon perhaps? :satisfied:

Can @Claghorn please post that on the other side of the forum as entertainment for the masses? Pretty please?

Just a suggestion, but the OP may wish to clarify prior to opening the poll, are we voting for the most egregiously hideous 'what was I thinking?' fit (coughClagscough) or are we voting for the most successfully folded 'what was I thinking?' Item into a half- way decent agreeable whole?

If my wife would let me, and if I wasn't already heavily invested in the CM side of things, and if it fit my personality (it doesn't), I would wear Yohji regularly. Probably my favorite clothing designer.

As a whole, I like the below outfit a lot, but if I were able to wear Yohji, I'd probably stick with something like the sweater. I don't look good in lots of black, and Yohji rarely does earthtones.

Edit:

This. I'd wear this in total if I could:

Maybe with a Katana.

My idea with the challenge was the latter, ie to make your whatthehellwasithinking item work in an agreeable whole. But it is a good idea to remind people of this when the poll goes up. Will do.

Given the audience, perhaps this is a better entry?

I think Claghorn's original entry does integrate the item in question into an "agreeable whole": everything coheres, nothing dissonates.

Whether or not it is to one's liking is arguably a different question, as is the question of whether or not its departure from CM is a factor to be taken into consideration.

As usual I think it's probably best to allow people to vote their conscience.

Cheers,

Sorry Clags I don't understand how anyone, especially someone with CM credentials like you, could even contemplate stepping out of the house wearing those ... whatever risible chopped up bell bottom raggedy trouser thingies. I thought such garb(age) was for catwalks only and not for human consumption in the real world. Either way despite my live-and-let-live leanings I'm sure I'd find it difficult not to point and laugh if I ever saw such a thing in the wild and certainly couldn't take anyone seriously dressed like that. So I'm a victim of the mores of 20/21st century traditions. I admit it!

That is a fantastic sport coat. A little FU but not too overdone. Your Japanese stuff was interesting (goes hand-in-hand with the appreciation of Kurosawa and Mifune?) but a little costumey for me. Certainly looked comfortable and well-made, though!

I think it depends on the context. In an art department of a university, absolutely. I think a lot of the SW&D folks who wear it regularly are in creative industries. In a business school? It would be horribly out of place.

As far as the relationship between CM credentials and wearing stuff like that: I like CM because of the way things fit together to create a whole outfit. I think the same can be said for a lot of different styles in SW&D. If I could pull it off, I absolutely would. But it's also one of those things that you can't just wear a few times a month (unlike CM). Something that is that avante garde, you've got to wear it regularly enough that it becomes a part of your external image.

I definitely find those two outfits more impressive, interesting, and aesthetically pleasing than anything I've ever worn.

I see nothing out of the ordinary here.

To be honest, had this appeared, say, over on WAYWRN I probably would have 'thumbed' it. But this is a degree-of-difficulty challenge: take something unusual that is difficult to combine into a coherent outfit, and for me a boating blazer doesn't quite fit that description

Still a nice outfit, however.

Cheers,

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
