Formal Waistcoat question

I just purchased my first Tuxedo about a week ago for an evening Black Tie Optional Wedding. Since purchasing it and reading a lot of information I have come to see that 2 button Notch Lapels are frowned upon, but live and learn I suppose. Anyhow, the Tux I purchased was just the dinner jacket and pants. I also purchased a 1/2" pleated shirt at the same time. I know that 5 or 6 button Waistcoats are Prom wear, but it is extremely difficult to find a low-cut 3 button one. I have found two on the internet, one is wool with a satin shawl lapel and the other is all poly/satin with a shawl lapel. Are Waistcoats supposed to have the same type of Notch Lapel as my jacket or is shawl acceptable? I also know that it can be hard to get a separate wool waistcoat and have it match the black wool of the suit, but have others had success doing this? I would prefer to have it wool with trim than all satin if possible. Thank you for any advice you can give.

Don't panic. Some of us, who come out of the Ivy League/Trad style, wear notch lapel tuxes.
Mine is over 40 years old and is from Paul Stuart, and I am the original owner! However it only has one
button. I do have a low-cut silk vest, also with notch lapels that I bought with the tux. So they do match.
However, the key is matching the fabric. My guess is that you could get away with shawl lapels if the
fabic matches.

if it's just for one event, why not just wear a cummerbund? It's perfectly acceptable under 'the rules', and you won't have to worry about matching the fabric of your tuxedo or getting a correct fit, and it'll be easier to acquire and likely cheaper.

Cummerbund is preferable as a 'stray' waist coat will clash with the cloth of your evening dress.

I agree with the above two posts. In order to look good, you will also have to match the fabric texture of the vest with the jacket, which will be hard. You are better off with a cummerbund.
