Great pack!
One of our reviewers recently reviewed the Malloch's Seaweed Newman Roll Neck Jumper. Check out his thoughts on this modern contemporary version of the British submariner jumper here.

Great pack!
Great write up!! Thank you! I've been considering this pack from afar. Best of luck with it!View attachment 1882339
So - promised a few of you an update on my choice of buying the Field Pack and carrying it with me to my weekend in Boulder. I considered the Medium Duffle and the 48 hour bag as alternatives.
TL/DR: VERY glad I had the Field Pack as I had to walk over a mile to get to the bus station and the backpack straps came in HUGE.
From a volume standpoint, it held less than the medium duffle (which is listed at 43 Liters) but more than the 48 hour bag (listed as 34 Liters). The Field Pack is listed as 46 Liters, but that includes the wet pocket that protrudes into the bag so it's really 40 Liter bag.
Pro's of the Field Pack:
- Super lightweight (about half the weight of the 48 hour bag)
- Very functional - can carry three ways (hand, shoulder strap or backpack-style)
- Looks really good, especially in the green
- Great outside pockets - better than the duffle, but not as functional as the 48 hour
- Laptop slot on bottom, which was convenient
Con's of the Field Pack
- Clearly lacks the heritage look that we all like about Filson
- Plastic hardware - although it's very robust and I never once thought about babying it
- Laptop slot is on the bottom so have to be mindful when setting it down
- It's not really 46 Liters as Filson says as the wet pocket extends into the space inside
I'll probably keep it as it felt rugged, had a cool factor to it, and was super convenient, especially if you're walking distances. Sure, it's not the classic Filson duffle, which I still have, but I can see why Wired.com called it the best bag ever made (a bit of a stretch but he has a point).
Now - anyone want to trade a green Medium Duffle or a Heritage Sportsman for a Journeyman backpack?
Welcome...Hello all, first post here. I am looking for a talon leather strap for my, what I believe to be 238 Talon zippers. I'm not sure if it is a 238 due to the white tag being gone on the inside; however, the boot compartment doesn't have the buttons for the dividers. Had the bag for about a year, and I travel everywhere with it. If it is not a 238 would love some guidance on which model it is. Thanks in advance!
Welcome...
Pics of your bag?
Awesome bag to have. The 236 also doesn’t have dividers so it can be hard to tell sometimes without measurements. Based on the pics though, I’d say it’s a 238.Don't mind the wax and odebaun still on it. Just rewaxed and need to heat the bag up a hit more.
Outfitter 238 is my vote.Don't mind the wax and odebaun still on it. Just rewaxed and need to heat the bag up a hit more.
Not accurate. It was always an add-on, but it was an option before. Now you couldn’t get it added if you wanted to. That’s why you see some vintage bags with and some without.I read somewhere that the first 256 briefcases had a snap handle by default, like the bigger bags.
I can't find other sources to confirm it. Can anyone shines a light ?
That kinda stinks. The handle snap is a huge selling point for me. I had the 24 & 48 bags and found myself getting very annoyed with the 24s handles hanging off the side when carrying it on my shoulder. Obviously, it's personal preference but for me, it's a hard line. Not accurate. It was always an add-on, but it was an option before. Now you couldn’t get it added if you wanted to. has anyone ever gotten their Filson tote shortened? Thinking of going to a cobbler and asking, it doesn't seem that hard. Unstitch the straps, cut the bottom 2" and restitch them?
