A good friend of mine has never, ever been remotely qualified for any job he's gotten. By the way, he has a salesman's personality.

I'm convinced most people can do most jobs to at least a satisfactory level of competence, given say 6 months experience in the role and whatever role specific training is required. My definition of 'most people' ranges from anyone within a shot of average intelligence and average work ethic (95% of people?), to 51% of people depending on how disenchanted with humanity I am at any particular time.

Thats because most people can only function at a 'satisfactory level of competence'.

At a company event recently on diversity one of the very few female senior execs in my company (which is huge) stood up to encourage more of the females in the room to go for top jobs. She stated a view that if a man sees a job that he thinks he is only 50% qualified for, he is likely to shrug and just go for it, thinking "I'll learn the rest as I go, no risk no gain". A woman in the same situation will not go for it and needs to feel that she has 90% of the job requirements met before she will consider applying, hence fewer women even attempt to go for the big jobs. I'd never heard that one before and it made a change from the usual "its all the men's fault" line of discussion.
